On leur connait quelques figures d'ancêtres et maternités, et nombre d'objets stylisés et raffinés :
appuie-nuque, chasse-mouches, trompes en ivoire, tambours, sanza.

Et surtout les statuettes Yanda (dont celle-ci ne fait pas partie) de la société secrète Mani.

Belle statuette de faible ancienneté mais d'un grand esthétisme. On reconnait bien la stylisation propre à cette ethnie, capable de réaliser de véritables épures.

Ritual figure - Zande / Azande - RDC Zaire / Congo

The Zande people are very well known for their sculptures that represent their ancestors or animal like figures.

The figures have simplified features and enlarged heads. The sculptures protect the people from illness, hunting, evil spirits, and much more. The figures are different based on weather they are female or male.

If it is a female is it usually made from wood or fired clay. They are called yanda. The yanda figures are often decorated with accessories, like bead collars, pendants, and coins.

The yanda gains its power when the chief blows smoke on it and rubs paste on it. In some of the more northern Zande areas people have found large pole-like figures in the ground. It is thought to have been grave markers. The Zande tribes’ beliefs and style of life are based on their art. Everything they have is what they have made.
