Mami Wata : son nom est une adaptation de l'anglais mommy water:
C'est la (déesse) mère des eaux, figure mythique et très populaire du culte Vaudou (religion officielle au Bénin).

Déesse crainte des pêcheurs, elle symbolise aussi bien la mer nourricière que l'océan destructeur.

Mami Wata est avant tout une divinité éwé, dont le culte est très présent sur la côte atlantique du Togo (mais aussi au Nigéria, au Cameroun, au Congo) où elle symbolise la puissance suprême.

Mais l'esprit de Mami Wata semble être également lié à d'autres esprits de l'eau plus anciens, comme "ndi mmili" (connu chez les Igbo) .

Mami Wata est souvent représentée en peinture où elle figure sous les traits d'une sirène ou d'une belle jeune femme brandissant des serpents.
Ses couleurs sont rouges et blanches, couleurs reprises par la plupart de ses adeptes.

Mami Wata peut donner la richesse à ses adeptes, ses "filles" ou à leurs conjoints, mais elle n'est jamais connue pour donner la fertilité.

Selon la croyance Vaudou, celui qui trouvera l'un de ces cheveux sur la plage aura la richesse à condition de lui rester fidèle. Mais attention ! Mami Wata peut aussi avoir une face plus sombre, en tenant en esclavage sexuel l'homme qu'elle enrichit, en échange d'un membre de sa famille ou du don son membre viril. En cas d'infidélité, le maleureux est puni de mort...

De nos jours, Mami Wata est intéressée par tout le contemporain de choses notamment dans les offrandes qui sont faites à son culte : certaines de ses offrandes préférées incluent les parfums, les lunettes de soleil, le coca-cola et de manière générale tout ce qui est importé en Afrique.

Très belle Mami wata assise, bois tendre polychrome. Un bras est fragilisé.

Mami Wata is a water-spirit, sometimes described as a mermaid figure, who can found throughout the western coastal regions and into central Africa.

Mami Wata is described as having long dark hair, very fair skin and compelling eyes. Although she may appear to her devotees (in dreams and visions) as a beautiful mermaid, complete with tail, she is also said to walk the streets of modern African cities in the guise of a gorgeous but elusive woman.

She is interested in all things contemporary: some of her favorite offerings include sweet, imported perfumes, sunglasses and Coca-Cola. Nonetheless, the spirit appears to be related to other water spirits (known in Igbo, a language of southeastern Nigeria, as ndi mmili) who have a much longer history on the continent. Mami Wata's colors are red and white.

Those she afflicts with visions and temptations, and who experience her as an obsession or an illness, may wear the red of sickness and dangerous heat. Others who have a more positive orientation towards the spirit may show their blessings by wearing white.

Most devotees wear a combination of red and white clothing. Mami Wata is also said to have a number of avatars on earth--mortal women who have the same look as the deity and who act as her "daughters." Mami Wata may give wealth to her devotees, her "daughters" or to her (male) spouses, but she is never known to give fertility. Some Igbo stories suggest that the fish under the waters are her children, and that she uses them as firewood.
