The Kingdom of Benin, in modern southern Nigeria, is renowned for its magnificent bronzes and
ivory sculptures.
These works represent one of humanity’s major treasures and some of the main
pieces in museum collections around the world.
In addition, the Kingdom of Benin’s supra-regional influence from the 15th to 19th century and the
exceptional quality of these pieces has given them a symbolic meaning in the collective expression
of African identity throughout the 20th century. Traditional royal court ceremonies are still
performed today in Benin, celebrating the empire’s glorious past.
The current king of Benin’s
authority is, for that matter, deeply linked to the veneration of the ancient kings who preceded him
in the royal dynasty. He still has great influence on a regional level in the south of modern Nigeria,
and is highly regarded throughout the African continent.
