This type of mask is known as ungulali, meaning flute, which refers to its association with the music that accompanied the traditional dance of the mask, worn mainly at funerals of important citizens and at special events. The quality of the carving as well as the its origin in the sculpture-rich region of the Benue Valley of east-central Nigeria make this acquisition an important addition to the African collection.
